The A Level results just released by local schools show continued improvement particularly in the attainment of higher grades.

At Gunnersbury School 90% of exam results were graded A-C, the top level in the borough. Gumley House achieved 80% A-C grades and 55% of grades were A or B. This was the second highest in the borough.

Andy Prindiville, Deputy Head of Gunnersbury School said, "The average point score achieved per student was particularly impressive: 368; this is, by quite some considerable distance, the best ever average point score in the school's history. "

Gumley House RC School Exams Officer Lousie Wassell said, “We are thrilled for our Head Girl who has attained five A level passes at grade A and will go on to study Maths at Warwick University. A further eight pupils gained three or more A levels at grade A.”

Chiswick Community School saw its A-C grades fall from 75% last year to 69% this year but there was a sharp improvement in the percentage of exams graded A or B at 52%. 7 students at the school gained at least 3 As.

Brentford School for Girls saw the biggest improvement overall with the number of A-C grades received soaring from 54% to 69%. Headteacher Julie Tomkins said, “We are extremely pleased overall with the girls' excellent performance at both AS and particularly A2. Credit to staff and students for their hard work. Congratulations to Madihah Khan who achieved 4 straight As and Emma Johnston for her 3As and a B. Lots of students achieved the highest grades at both AS and A2. Well done!”

Isleworth and Syon School for Boys saw result fall but there were individual successes. Headteacher Euan Ferguson said,“We are all delighted with the performance of all of our students. At the top end, Abdillahi Mohammed and Sunkalp Sharma both gained places at Oxford University to study Middle Eastern Studies and Engineering respectively. Hardev Dhamu, Jamie Buckland, Bavinder Virdi and Jazz Modu all gained 3 or 4 straight As and progress on to degrees in Medicine and Physics, Maths and Physics and Psychology respectively.”

Across the borough of Hounslow 97 per cent of the 1216 students received a pass grade in their A-levels, and a record 69.3 per cent received A-C grades, compared to 69.1 per cent in 2006. At the higher end of the grades, the proportion of students achieving A-B grades has jumped from 39.7 per cent to 43.9 per cent.

Congratulating the students on their success, Cllr Dr Robert Kinghorn, Executive Member for Education and Children, said, “What pleased me most of all was the huge rise in the A-B pass rates for Hounslow students. These are the key grades which get young people in to best universities and set them on the path to a successful life. ”
